Aluminum padlocks are lightweight, corrosion-resistant locks that are best for residential use – the tool box or the back gate, for instance. Aluminum locks are cheaper than their steel counterparts, but they can’t handle quite as much abuse. For high-value property or equipment, you’ll want a tougher lock.
